WordPress powers a large share of the world's websites, but many of its default settings are not optimized for SEO. This checklist focuses on what actually matters, not a confusing long list. Work through it top to bottom.
Basic technical settings
- Enable HTTPS and make sure every page uses it.
- Set a clean permalink structure with words, not random numbers.
- Make sure a sitemap.xml exists and is submitted to Google Search Console.
- Check robots.txt does not block important pages.
- Ensure staging or development sites are set to no-index so they are not indexed.
On-page for every page
- One unique title per page, a reasonable length, with the main keyword.
- A compelling meta description, around 150 to 160 characters.
- One H1 per page, with a clean heading hierarchy.
- Internal links between articles and important pages.
- Descriptive alt text on all images.
Performance and Core Web Vitals
WordPress themes and plugins can easily make a site heavy. Enable caching, compress images, and limit unnecessary plugins. For detailed steps on improving speed, see the guide to fixing Core Web Vitals.
Content and maintenance
- Update still-relevant old content to keep it accurate.
- Avoid thin or duplicate content; use canonical tags when needed.
- Check for broken links regularly.
- Make sure the site is mobile-friendly.
How to validate this checklist
Ticking a checklist manually is easy to slip on. An automatic audit checks these items at once and flags what is not done. SEO Fixindo can even apply some fixes via a WordPress plugin or snippet, so you do not have to edit the theme. See the full guide or a sample audit report.
Frequently asked questions
- Is installing an SEO plugin enough on WordPress?
- Plugins help with basic on-page items like titles and meta, but do not always catch technical issues like per-page Core Web Vitals or wrong canonicals. A full audit complements them.
- What permalink structure is best?
- A short, clean structure with meaningful words, usually based on the post name. Avoid permalinks with numbers or random parameters.
- How many plugins are safe?
- There is no fixed number, but each plugin adds load. Use only what you need, pick lightweight and maintained ones, and remove the unused.
- Does this checklist apply to non-WordPress sites?
- The principles apply to any website. Only the way you apply them differs. The SEO Fixindo audit works for any platform.
